Norfolk County Council unveiled the UK’s largest Wi-Fi network today in a join partnership with the East of England Development Agency.
Residents can now enjoy free internet access from anywhere in the 30 square Kilometres covered by the Wi-Fi mesh network. The £1.1m network offers a limited 256kbps for general users and 1Mbps for Public sector users. The network is limited in this way to ensure it doesn’t compete with incumbent broadband providers.
The network uses 200 devices with two inbuilt radios, one provides access to laptops, PCs and smartphones in range, while the other provides access for mesh devices. The 200 devices can be found attached to lampposts all over the 30 square Km range of the network, which is set to be extended to more rural districts later this year.
