19% more Twittering

Micro blogging site Twitter has increased its worldwide traffic by nearly 1/5th, now up to 44.5m unique users from 37.3m, as recorded in June by ComScore.

Whilst this is impressive, if you go back 12 months you'll find the increase in unique users has been a staggering 1,460% from a user base of just 2.9m.

The advent of many celebrities now using Twitter has increased its' exposure and no doubt helped to propel it to such success, however Twitter still has a long way to go before it surpasses Facebook, the world's largest social networking site with over 307m users, and MySpace at 125m global users.

Looking further into the statistics it shows that over twice as many adults use Twitter compared to teenagers - unsurprising if you heard the recent report of the teen intern at a leading City firm who gave such an insight into their digital world.  Him and his peers all felt Twitter was for the older generation, where as they prefer social sites such as Facebook, and communicate via messenger and VOIP services such as Skype - generally shunning paid for telephone calls wherever possible.
