September 11, 2008 - Google expands their Internet services with a new Web browser. The Google browser, Chrome was launched in its beta form for Windows XP and Vista users last week and is already squashing Internet Explorer in the stats and the stock market.
A Web metrics vendor reports today that many IE users abandoned it to try out the new Chrome last week and that Chrome accounted for 0.7% of all browsers used last week. Microsoft’s IE lost 1.4 percentage points in the market share during the same period and ended the week 71% in share.
But Google isn’t the only one taking clients from IE. Users are also switching to Mozilla Corp.’s Firefox web browser and Apple Inc.’s Safari. Opera Software ASA’s Opera also shows gains at the expense of Internet Explorer.
Reports show that Firefox’s shares climbed by 0.3 points and Safari went from 6.3% to 6.7%. Opera took a small gain of 0.01 points bringing them up to 0.75%. Internet Explorer may have been the senior browser but newer alternatives seem to be preferred by many users.
Google’s Chrome showed a market share of 1% in the first 24 hours which is very promising. The real high point for Chrome since its launch since its debut was on September 2nd when it averaged 1.2% for its first day. Then on the following Monday it averaged 0.9%.
On Sunday, Google have Chrome its first update patch to work out the bugs and kinks.
