Google reigns

Long live King Google. According to Hitwise, Google continues to be the most popular search engine in the UK. Google accounted for 87.3% of searches in the UK in May. Stock results have confirmed the popularity as well.

Although Google’s share has remained steady since April 2008 shares actually rose by 12 % when compared with May of last year.

That’s even better than in the US where Google accounted for 68.29% of all U.S. searches in May.

Yahoo, by comparison, only nabbed the interest of 4% of searches in the UK in May 2008. True, that’s a bit better – but only 2% in April.

comScore report on Google's numbers varies quite a bit more than Hitwise. comScore reported last week that Google only accounted for 74.4% of search in the UK and said that Yahoo did a bit better, 4.4%.

Coming in third but still very close to Yahoo! Hitwise said, was MSN. According to Hitwise this popular search engine pulled in 3.70% of searches in the UK in May, followed by Ask search with just over 3% of searches. Both MSN and Ask increased in May – MSN by 2% and Ask by 6%.

In the US, Yahoo! Search, MSN Search and Ask.com each received 19.95%, 5.89% and 4.23% respectively.
