UK is Digital Leader
The UK is now the second largest user of social networking sites in the world, with 40% of people signed up to sites such as Facebook, Myspace and Bebo. Canada is the worlds biggest advocate of social networking with 53% of the population regularly signing in.
Here in the UK we are also setting the standard in converting to digital television from the old analogue system. At the end of 2006, 76% of UK households had digital receivers and this figure will almost certainly have shown a substantial increase by the time that we head in to 2008. With a population so keen to embrace these new technologies, it should come as no surprise to discover that online advertising revenues are on the increase. According to a recent report by the BBC, 'at £33, advertisers in the UK spend more money per person on internet advertising than any other country, twice as much as that spent in France, Germany and Italy combined.'
Recent reports however have shown that there is some resistance to advetising on sites such as Facebook. A new form of advertising was introduced to the popular social site which created a feed from one friend's page to another, giving information on websites visited or products bought. Such an invasion of privacy was fiercely contested by internet pressure groups and resulted in Facebook changing the scheme to 'opt in' only.
