Yahoo opens Southeast Asia markets

Google has dominated the media with news of its new features and releases lately, but Yahoo is doing new things too. Yahoo recently announced they’re moving into new markets in Southeast Asia.

Yahoo’s Sponsored Search is now available in Southeast Asia market. Marketers can now expand their advertising and connect with customers in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

While Google may dominate in other markets, Yahoo! is the most popular online network in Asia Pacific (comScore 2007). They reach 50+ million people each month in Southeast and are the search leader across Southeast Asia (Hitwise 2007).

Even so, the Southeast Asia market currently accepts ads in English only.

Yahoo’s Southeast Asia network includes the top search engines in Southeast Asia, including Empas, Naver, DreamWiz, hanaFos.com and HiNet.

Language, experts say, is the primary reason Google looses in Southeast Asian searches. No matter how powerful it is, without enough Korean-language data to trawl to satisfy South Korean customers, it’s at a disadvantage. By partnering with the most popular search engines in Asia however, Yahoo hopes to take advantage of that open window.
